I've started doodling a little book of dungeon maps, towns, countrysides, etc. With these there's no planning or prep, they are just whatever pops into my head at the time. Most of the time I'm making them when I'm out and about and have some time to kill. Here's a couple pics:
So awesome! How long does each take (on average)? This seems like a fun way to fill time. I too keep doodle pads everywhere.
ReplyDeleteIt varies depending on what type of map I'm doing. I think at least an hour for the more complicated ones. Not entirely sure though since they are rarely done in one sitting.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap. I love hand drawn maps....
ReplyDeleteVery cool.
ReplyDeleteWoah! These are beautiful. I love how the city ones include so much geography - normally this sort of map doesn't venture beyond the walls, but you've got fields, harbours, gorges, bridges, hillsides... Just incredible.
ReplyDeleteI know those city maps are show stoppers, but the crosshatching is my favorite part. Absolutely perfect!
ReplyDeleteare you using a micron 01 or an 005 for the majority of your work? just curious. fantastic mapwork!
ReplyDeleteMiss Heather,
ReplyDeleteYour Maps are wonderful, beautiful pieces. I love all the details and use of space. Keep up the amazing work. I have one simple question, what type of pen do you use?
Respectfully,
AJ Stone
Thanks so much guys!!! :D
ReplyDeleteTetujin & Stonewerks: I use Micron pens. They're great to draw with and the ink is waterproof, fade proof and archival. I think I started off with the 005 size, but I've switched to using 01 for all my line work and 03 if I'm making wider lines or filling in an area.
Hope that helps!
thanks much. i use an 01 and a moleskine for a lot of my daily sketching as well, which is why your maps caught my eye. i was all "man, that looks familiar!"
Deletei just recently picked up an 005 though, and i've lost myself by noodling tiny little sketches for hours and basically increasing my chances of going blind early.
keep up the good work!
I absolutely love the notebook. What is it?
ReplyDeleteI'm using a 3.5"x5.5" Moleskin sketchbook with "squared" paper. Also, it's the paperback version that comes in a pack of 3 as opposed to the hardcover version that has more pages.
ReplyDeleteWOWZERS!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful maps in your collection! I am in awe; so much geographical detail in such a small amount of space! Bravo, dear lady.... Bravo!!
I took the liberty to view (and join) this site as well as the Weekly Artist site just from viewing the pieces above! I just cant stop looking at your work.... fantastic work all around!
ooops... that is Weekly Sketches! Your work has stoop-tified me!
DeleteReally nice, very lovingly detailed. I'm trying to work on making more attractive maps myself, starting with better shading and crosshatching. Please share more if you get the time.
ReplyDeleteWowza!
